Welcome and our name

THE ORCHARD SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH

For the last eleven years, the Orchard has been the church for visitors to Melbourne, and also overseas students to worship with on the Sabbath day. Under the careful leadership of Pastor Rod Anderson, we were the first Seventh-day Adventist group in years to plant and host a viable ongoing church in Melbourne’s CBD. Today the Orchard is the only Seventh-day Adventist Church still operating in Melbourne’s CBD.

Furthermore, the name The Orchard is rich with meaning, for example an orchard is place where seedlings shoot, where leaves grow and trees grow and eventually bear fruit.  We see our The Orchard in exactly the same way.  People who have an interest in Christianity yet are unsure of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ, spend time with us, study the Bible, worship with us, eat meals with us and they learn in both theory and practice what it is to be a true follower of Jesus Christ.

What about “Seventh-day Adventist?”  It may seem an unusual name, however it is quite straight forward.  This part of our name represents our two key doctrines which together, distinguish us from other denominations and churches.  Jesus honoured the Ten Commandments, if fact Jesus lived out the Ten Commandments, and as a result Jesus worshipped on the seventh day of the week, all of the apostles and disciples after Christ’s resurrection and ascension did likewise.  The fourth Commandment given to mankind by God found in Exodus 20:8-11, instructs us that we are to, “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” This is why we too remember the seventh day Sabbath, because as followers of Jesus Christ, we emulate His worship practices (Luke 4:16) along with His followers in the New Testament (Acts 13:42-44; Revelation 14:12). If you would like to do further study on the Sabbath and its relevance today, you can click here. If you would like to do further study on the Ten Commandments, please click here. You may be also be scratching your head over the word “Adventist.” It is a Latin word which reflects one’s belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  In John 14:1-3, Jesus promised His followers that He would come back for them.  In Matthew 24:29-31, Jesus said that He would return with His angels and all the world would witness the event, and the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 declares the following;

For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18  Wherefore comfort  one another with these words.”

The Apostle Paul is clear that when Jesus Christ returns the faithful dead will be resurrected and meet the Lord in the air, while those faithful to Christ who are alive will also be lifted up with them.  If you would like to do further study on the Second Coming of Jesus Christ please click here.  However, if you live in Melbourne why not contact Pastor Rod Anderson on 0422603941 and arrange a meeting with him, he will only be too happy to meet with you and answer your questions and study the Bible with you.  Furthermore, if you would like to do Bible studies at home, click on this link and our set of 25 Orchard Bible study guides with instructions, will be mailed to you anywhere in the world.
